About the study
Archetyping charity needs
This assessment comes from a sector study on supporting charities in their digital journeys. The model exists so charities can understand their own tech gaps, funders can target support where it matters, and partners can diagnose needs accurately instead of guessing.
What the survey found
- 100%of charities surveyed lack a dedicated IT budget
- 71%have no digital strategy or roadmap
- 86%want funding or support for digital transformation
- 36%still track donors manually
- 36%have documented processes
Based on surveys with 14 Singapore charities, 2025.
The three gaps
Strategy gap
No clear roadmap for technology priorities, with weak governance around it.
Budget gap
IT spending is ad hoc, with limited planning and allocation.
Skill gap
Uneven skill levels across teams, and limited use of partners to fill them.
How the score works
The model looks at 13 dimensions, from process readiness and donor management to leadership, skills, budget, culture and use of external partners. Four of them describe your context and are not scored. The other 11 questions each score 1 to 3 points, for a maximum of 33. Your total places you in one of five archetypes: Digital Starter, Explorer, Integrator, Optimiser or Leader.
